I have been volunteering since the very beginning of Family Promise. I remember I was in my Sunday School class and they were asking us who wanted to help. I said, “I’ll be the Food Coordinator,” and I still am for my church. That’s my role. I try to make them feel special and hang their names up, make the kitchen a bit more home-like. I even went to Knoxville training to see how their Family Promise worked. My favorite memories have to be of the children. One year we had families for Christmas and we broke up the parents and the kids. The kids got to do shopping for the parents and the parents got to do shopping for the kids. We got back to the church and we had the groups each individually wrap their gifts for each other. Each family had stockings and they had their own decorated tree in their room. It was just really special. It’s the simple things of the children that I love most. Them asking me if they can help clean up, or asking me to pray with them, hearing them talk to God. I love this ministry. I was called to this ministry. It just makes such a big difference that they see that people do care. You are just kind, because you don’t know what they have been through. When they see nothing but the hands and feet of Jesus, and that we care, it makes the world of a difference.
